This year's event saw 6 teams from CCC, 8 from VSJ, one combined team and 7 Guernsey Velo pairs make the annual pilgrimage to Normandy to push themselves to the limit (unfortunately beyond it in some cases) against the clock and several pro teams.

After the sizzling temperatures that have been endured the last two years it was time for change, and it certainly was different this year. The forecast hadn't been promising all week, but the rain managed to hold off long enough for everyone to get their course recce ride on the Saturday in the dry. Comments were made about the size of the tar patches on some sections and the limited grip they would afford when wet, which when combined with the technical descents in the second half of the course would make for a hair-raising experience for all involved.

Sunday dawned with a slight drizzle and the clouds scudding across the sky pushed by a very strong breeze. It was very humid, so when the rain did briefly stop the roads didn't dry as quickly as hoped.

Then the reports started coming in of accidents on the descents, race bravado pushing the tyres beyond their level of grip. First it was Steven King, then the tale of Allan Renyard going through the back window of a stationary car and then Noel Hayden. With all these reports making it to the ears of the later starters, caution became the watchword to pay dividends.

Mike Harris and his new partner Dave Mayman managed to maintain Mike's winning ways in the veteran category with his third successive victory with as many partners. Helen Goulding and Sarah Smith found the cooler conditions more to their liking than the midday oven they have endured in recent years, to finish fourth in the ladies. Andy Smith reported that he doesn't know what all the fuss was about, which wasn't the version that Malcolm Armes gave when he could finally speak again. Marc riding with Jim from the "other lot" has found his form of the season which Jim didn't really appreciate on the final drags into Marigny. Rumour has it that Chaz is going to buy Noel a pair of stabilisers in the hope he'll manage to stay upright one day. There is also a date to enter into your diaries - Colin and Simon have agreed to train for the next event they enter, the 2012 edition!

Many thanks to Sam, Sue du Val, Sue 'Miere', Michaela Hayden, Sarah and Helen, Malcolm and Andy for providing the support in the following vehicles.

Malcom Armes and Andy Smith appear from the gloom

Guernsey's Mark Batiste and Allan Renyard. The pair failed to finish when Allan's ride came an abrupt halt in the back of car. Allan is on the mend, the bike is not.

Tracy Dowinton (smiling) and Lyn Mahy (grimacing)

Peter Du Val looks on as Rob Miere plays to the crowd

Mike Mitchinson enjoys the rain with Des McClellend

Neither Mick Higginson nor Bill Buist appear to be enjoying the rain

Later starters, Sarah Smith and Helen Goulding still had rain

Jim Garrett and Mark Le Sueur doing their bit for inter-club relationships

Andy Munns and Steve King. Steve's crash and Andy's evasive action meant they failed to finish.

Noel Hayden shows he's made of sterner stuff as he climbed back on after his crash to make sure he and Chaz Knight completed the course.

Simon Fenton and Colin Perry have that knowing look as they set off only three minute behind Du Val and Miere (yes, they caught them)

Not sure Steve Whiteside's heart is in this as he climbs the starting hill with Sean Twohig
