DNF – Robin Ovenden

The second race of the 2003/4 Caesarean Cycling Club’s Trinity Tyres Winter Series was held at the Belles Fleurs course last Sunday.

The short but varied course, which consists of farm tracks, fields and a tricky wooded section, proved a real test of both stamina and skill for the 36 competitors who braved the wind and rain.

The first lap pace was fast and furious, with many opting to run the slippy technical sections on the first lap. By the end of lap one James Paterson, Robin Ovenden, Kieron Mills and Bruce Dingle had already opened a good gap on the chasing group and were set to do battle over the six lap course. Due to mechanical failure, Robin Ovenden was forced to retire leaving James Paterson to surge ahead and clinch his first victory of this winter series.

In the Sports Class Jim Connolly put in yet another great ride to secure his second win with the ever improving James Ollivier finishing a very strong second.

The Veteran Class was more of a battle for second and third spot with Bruce Dingle storming his way to victory from the very start, having ridden the entire wooded section on all but the first lap! Second and third was a more closely fought affair with Mick Ollivier and Dave Bihet riding five out of the six laps on each others wheel. On the final lap Dave Bihet had obviously had three shredded wheat for breakfast, putting in a final sprint to finish just ahead of Mick Ollivier.

The Schoolboys Class again was a fairly close race with Scott Dingle putting another fine ride in the heavy conditions, but chased all the time by both Ryan and Rhys Hidrio.

The next race of the Winter Series is on 14 December at Les Varines Hill, St. Saviour. The venue will be signposted and competitors should be ready to race at 9.30am.
