The first race of the 2003/4 Caesarean Cycling Club’s Trinity Tyres Winter Series was held at Val de la Mare last Sunday.

The dry, overcast weather attracted a surprising number of regular and new riders, with some 41 riders anxiously taking to the start line for 9 laps of what has grown into semi-technical course.

Thanks to James Paterson and the welcome return of Mark Le Sueur and Richard Tanguy, the pace was blistering for the first 3 laps. Thrills, spills and punctures were abundant throughout the race thanks to some very tricky sand and bunker sections.

Heavy crashes by Robin Ovenden, Bruce Dingle and Kieron Mills left them all chasing hard to close the gap to the leaders. An untimely puncture for Mark Le Sueur also left him no choice but to retire. By lap 6 the race had a new leader with Robin Ovenden managing to claw his way back from 6th position and surging on to take a decisive victory over James Paterson and Kieron Mills with young Richard Tanguy putting in an outstanding ride to finish in 4th place overall!

Jim Connolly put in solid ride to secure his first win in the Sports Class while being chased consistently by Chris Stone and Steve Greig.

The Schoolboys Class this year looked to be a fierce contest between the Hidrio duo of Ryan and Rhys, but little did they know. Scott Dingle put in a truly amazing ride to win the Schoolboys Class by a half a lap and to finish 9th overall! Watch out Bruce.

The Veteran Class as usual was a close fought battle between Colin Malzard, Mick Ollivier, Ian Cabot and Dave Bihet. The secret training of Colin Malzard finally paid dividends with victory over Mick Ollivier and Ian Cabot.

A special mention must go to our lone female rider Janet Gallichan who rode determinedly to finish the race.

The next race of the Winter Series is on 30 November at Belles Fleurs Nursery, Grouville. Competitors should be ready to race at 9.30am.
