Race 1, Les Platons, 16 November 2003

The first round of the under 12’s mountain bike races, sponsored by Vittel Water took place at Les Platons, recently.

Many of the experienced competitors moved up an age group, and were racing against riders a year older. In all, there were 40 children competing and it was encouraging to see newcomers, not only in the younger classes, but in every age category

It was newcomer, Harry Garnham, who set the pace from the start in the 5 years and under class. He coped well with the tight turns, rough terrain and a steep downhill slope, in the 3 lap race. Always in his sights, was Samuel Kermin, who finished 2nd, and Michael Milner was 3rd in his first ever race.

The course was extended for the 8 and 9 year olds race. Last years champion in the 6 and 7 year olds category, Joshua O’Donoghue-Rowe, moved up a class and proved he was still in command, in the older age group. Leading from the start, his strong riding, earned him first place. Toby Luce, also in this class for the first time, held off the older competitors, and took a well earned, 2nd place. Samuel Coutanche and Samuel Allix, battled for 3rd and 4th places, with Coutanche taking the higher position. Jonathon Harris rode a consistent race to finish a safe 5th. A much improved, Rikki Knowlton, finished in 6th place having passed newcomer, George Milner, on the last lap. Milner maintained the 7th position.

A close and exciting race followed, in the 6 and 7 year olds, six lap race. At the front, there was an excellent battle between Stephan Kermin and Adam Trotter. Kermin led in the first lap, but Trotter passed him, and stayed ahead for the next two laps. Kermin then fort back to lead in lap four, but it was Trotter who finished stronger to take first place. Newcomers to the sport, Demri Mitchell, Connor Greig and Hugh Percival, will be riders to look out for. Mitchell rode a steady race and maintained 3rd place throughout, however Greig, who was in 7th place, in lap one, worked hard to take 4th place overall, just in front of Percival. Twins, Nikita and Danielle Connan, had their own battle, with Nikita finishing 9th just ahead of her sister.

In the 10 and 11 year olds class, Stephen Haley, last seasons 8 and 9 year olds class champion, once again proved hard to beat. Completing six laps of the extended course, he rode a fast, but steady race to take first place. James Gibaut tried hard to keep up with Haley, but settled for a comfortable 2nd place. Matthew Coote took 3rd, and a very good effort by Kurt Dingle, earned him 4th place.
