CCC Vittel Water Children's MTB Winter Series 2003/2004 |
|
Race 2, Mont Rossognol, St. Ouen, 7 December 2003Despite the bitterly cold conditions, 33 children came to Mont Rossignol and took part in the 2nd round of the Ceasarean Cycling Club, mountain bike races for under 12’s, sponsored by Vittel Water, on Sunday. A fast and narrow downhill start, quickly strung out the competitors, in preparation for the first sharp left hand bend. From then on the gruelling grass track proved difficult for some riders, whilst the long straight stretches gave some the opportunity to better their positions. Five laps of a shorter course, were completed by the 5 years and under class and Samuel Kermin, his first time on a larger bike, took the lead from the start. A close battle followed between Samuel Maher and Harry Garnham. A very determined Garnham found some extra strength on the last lap to pass Maher and take a well deserved 2nd place.

The 6 and 7 year olds class, was very close between the two lead riders, Demri Mitchell and Stephan Kermin. They both battled it out throughout, with each taking the lead place during the race. Even after 6 laps of the course, both boys had to race to the finish line. Kermin found the extra strength to take the win, leaving Mitchel the 2nd place. A good steady race by Connor Greig earned him 3rd place ahead of Matthew Rayson in 4th. Joshua O’Donoghue-Rowe again proved hard to beat with an outstanding performance in the 8 and 9 year age group, making the extended course look easy. He led from the start and finished over a lap ahead of the 2nd place rider. Behind him, however several battles ensued, and though Toby Luce was down in 6th place in the opening laps, he gained pace and finished in 2nd place. On lap 3, Samuel Coutanche and Robert Connan were fighting for 2nd place, when they collided and Matthew Derrien took advantage to pass them both and take 3rd place. Derrien worked hard to maintain this position giving him one of his best results to date. Coutanche had been pushed down to 5th place but rode well and finished in 4th ahead of Connan. Adam Le Cheminant, last seasons champion, in this 10 and 11 year age group, still proved to the in excellent form. He missed the first race of the series but lead from the start and finished well ahead of the rest of the field, lapping 5 out of the other 8 competitors, during the 6 lap race. Stephen Haley finished a safe 2nd, as did Kurt Dingle in 3rd. A close race for 4th and 5th positions followed, with James Gibaut taking the higher position ahead of Matthew Coote.
