Summer Mountain Bike Series, Race 3, 19 September 2004
|
|
At Belle Fleurs, Grouville Sponsored by Sunday saw race three of the CCC MTB Summer series take place in good dry conditions at Belle Fleur, Grouville. The twelve lap race, which was just over a mile in length, consisted of linked farm tracks and fields with a challenging wooded section in the middle. |
The start, a wide-open field narrowing to an 8ft gap in a hedge, proved to be an eventful affair with some twenty four riders all eager to be first through. Unfortunately, the first rider to hit the dirt was Pete Dingle followed a bit too closely by Jim Connolly. Having untangled bikes and body parts both managed to regain their composure and continue the race.
Managing to avoid the pile-up behind, the leading pack of Kieron
Mills, Robin Ovenden, the flying doctor (aka. Simon Slaffer) and James Patterson
all negotiated the first two drop-off sections smoothly and without further
incidence.
By the first wooded technical section, Kieron, Robin and James had made a
good break which grew considerably with each lap. By lap two James Patterson
was already feeling the strain of the fast pace which now just left Kieron
and Robin set for a two-way battle. On the third lap mechanical problems for
the second race in row, almost became a disaster for Robin.
The lead changed between the pair for the next ten laps, with Kieron managing to make ground on foot through the woods, only to be reeled back in on the open track sections. After a punishing 1h:25mins of racing and having lapped all riders up to fourth position the bell signalled the last lap. Leading into the final lap Kieron was intent on making his move through and out of the woods but, emerging together the race was to be finally decided on the penultimate straight. Having been patient and with the finish line in sight, Robin made his crucial move and rode clear for his first victory of this Summer series. Kieron had to settle for second with James Patterson and Ian le Lai taking third and fourth respectively.
The Sports class saw some of the most exciting and close fought racing for some time. The return of James Ollivier signalled a possible shake up, but with Jim Connolly, Chris Stone, Paul Le Breton and Jack Cunnigham all on top form, it was destined to a hard fought race. James had a blistering start and managed to quickly work his way clear of Chris, Jack and Paul, which he increased unchallenged over the twelve laps to take a fine first place. Jim, having been involved in the first lap crash, had to work hard to make up lost ground. Chris Stone rode strongly and smoothly, particularly in the woods where he managed to ride practically the whole section, to open and hold a clear gap for second place. Consistant pressure from both Paul Le Breton and Jack Cunnigham saw them catch and pass a thoroughly exhausted Jim Connolly with just three laps to go. A final lap burst from Paul saw him ride clear for a well deserved third place, with Jack having to settle for fourth.
With its leading points scorer Bruce Dingle out of the race due to injury, the Veterans Class was up literally up for grabs. Colin Malzard having packed in some extra secret training in the week, stormed away from the start and worked hard to stay clear to the finish. Ian Cabot secured a good second place with Tim Hubert holding off Dave Bihet for great third spot.
In the Junior Class Ryan Hidrio rode strongly to take yet another win. In the School Boys Class his brother Rhys also secured another victory but felt strong enough to continue and finish and impressive sixteenth overall. The School
Boys class was to also welcome some new faces. In his first ever race Chris Fisher looked to be enjoying himself and put in a great first performance to take third form Matthew Coote who was also riding his first senior race, having graduated from the under 12’s series. Well done all.
The Ladies Class also saw some much needed new blood with Caroline Davies having a superb first race. Steady and smooth riding on all sections of the course enabled her to hold off ever consistant Janet Gallichan.
Special thanks go to all those who helped prepare the course.
The next race is on Sunday 3rd October and will be sign posted
at Sion.
