2004 Series

At Mont Rossignol, St Ouen

Sponsored by
Lawrence de Gruchy Cycles Limited

Last Sunday saw race two of the CCC MTB Summer series take place in near perfect conditions at Mont Rossignol, St.Ouen.

Thirty riders took to the start line for what was going to be a demanding course, both physically and mechanically. This familiar course, which is used for the inter-insular, had been revised to include fast, technical decents with short but very sharp climbs.

The start was the usual 500 yard manic dash for positions before negotiating fast flowing single track into the decent. Super Veteran Bruce Dingle lead the pack for the first lap, chased closely by elite riders Kieron Mills, James Patterson, Robin Ovenden and Ian Le Lai.

Disaster was to strike Kieron on the very first technical section in the form of a punture. Having to stop for repairs, he managed to rejoin the race almost half a lap down, but only after running back to the start/finish to replace the entire tire.

In the meantime, James Patterson and Robin Ovenden had managed to work hard to open a considerable gap on the chasing riders. At the beginning of lap two Robin Ovenden was to suffer the second mechanical of the race, this time in the form of a broken saddle. Having run back to the start/finish to make repairs, his proved to be terminal and so was forced to retire. Ian Le Lai was to also suffer problems with punctures, three in all, on the same section of track. Having repaired all three and after a quick excursion through the gorse, he soldered on to the finish.

This left James Patterson out front on his own for the remaining eight laps, to take his first win of this series. Second went to Graham Horsley who rode determindly to try and close the gap, with Bruce Dingle hanging on to take third.

The Sports class was all change again this season with Jim Connolly’s summer road racing paying off in the form of a decisive victory. Chris Stone looked comfortable from the start to take second, and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself on the technical downhill sections. Third place may have surprised a few of the more experienced riders as this was only Paul Le Breton’s second race. Very impressive indeed!

The Veterans Class was won as usual by the ‘super vet’ Bruce Dingle followed, albeit some way behind, by an off-form Colin Malzard and the ‘Peter Pan’ of mountain biking, Simon Slaffer.

The Junior Class was a single horse race for Ryan Hidrio, as was the School Boys Class for his brother Rhys. Hopoefully by the Winter series they both may face more competition, as younger riders progress from the under 12 series.

The Ladies Class was again left to Janet Gallichan to take victory.

Special thanks go to all those who helped prepare the course at very short notice.

The next race is on Sunday 19th September, veune to be confirmed.
