Summer Mountain Bike Series, Race 4, 3 October 2004
|
|
Sponsored by Sunday saw race four of the CCC MTB Summer series take place in cool conditions at Sion, St. John. Thirty five
riders took to the line of what is the series hardest, but most enjoyable
course. |
At the beggining of the lap two, Mills suffered a mechanical problem and was forced to stop and make repairs before re-mounting and chasing hard to catch the leaders. Shortly after both Robin and James were to suffer the same fate. With family and friends watching Kieron was highly motivated for the win. By lap three, he and Richard Tanguy had managed to open a gap from the chasing duo. With injury forcing Robin to retire from the race, this left James with a lot of work to do by himself. By lap five Kieron had piled on the pressure, forcing Richard to drop off the pace and hold on for second place. By the finish Kiron had managed to open a considerable gap of almost three minutes from Richard and a further two minutes from James.
The Sports class was again to see some exciting racing with this series having produced three different winners. Jim Connoly, James Ollivier and the welcome return of Scott Vautier saw close and determined racing. Jim made an excellent start amongst the elite riders, but was closely tailed by James and Scott over the first three to four laps. Lap five saw James Ollivier suffer a puncture, and so was forced to stop to make repairs. This gave Scott the advantage to ride into second place with James having to settle for third. Further back other regular sports riders Chris Stone, Jack Cunnigham and Paul Le Breton were all having mixed performances.
The Veterans class was won with comparative ease by Bruce Dingle, with Colin Malzard and Dave Bihet taking second and third respectively. Further back, Sandy Hugh, having laid down a challenge to Michael Boarer the night before, was riding for pride and a little prize money. A whole £5! Simon Slaffer was unfortunate enough to suffer a terminal mechanical and so was forced to carry his bike across the finish line. Last spot was reserved for the welcomed return of Paul Vautier who showed great determination to finsh.
In the School Boys Class Rhys Hidrio secured another great victory on this tough course. Second went to Robert Coutanche who rode consistently on each lap with Matthew Coote securing third spot.
The Ladies Class also saw Caroline Davies take yet another victory from Janet Gallichan.
Special thanks go to all those who helped prepare the course.
The next race is on Sunday 17th October and will be sign posted at St. Ouens Manor.
