The second junior mountain bike event, organised by the Caesarean Cycling Club, was held recently at Les Platons. Competition in all age groups was fierce at this race which had the children doing what all children like doing – splashing through mud. The number of competitors in the 10 and 11 year old class resulted in a very crowded start line and a crash involving some of the riders as the whistle set them on their way. Rikki Knowlton rode a determined race, taking an early lead and whilst he held this position for all six laps, he was challenged throughout by Kurt Dingle and Stephen Haley, with Haley just passing Dingle on the line to take second place honours. Chantelle Coote held off the challenges of her nearest rival, once more beating Carl Gallichan into twelfth place. In the 8 and 9 year old category, Joshua O’Donoghue found his speed and strength challenged by Harry Cochrane, who chased hard for the entire length of this four-lap race. George Milner rode a steady event starting and finishing in third place, whilst Nikita Connan, although finding the going tough, completed the race in eighth position. The 6 and 7 year class saw the same three children taking top honours as in the first event, although this time it was Matthew Rayson who stormed through the field and established an early, unassailable lead. Harry Garnham held second place throughout, thereby ensuring that, even with only two races of the series complete, both he and Rayson have the same number of overall points going into the third event. Michael Milner completed the line up once more. In the first race of the afternoon held over three laps of the course, parents and children alike were treated to a brilliant display of riding and racing from the 5 years and under competitors. Sammy Kermin won the race having led all the way, but not without being chased hard by Charlotte Pollard, taking part in her first event. Twin sister Olivia Pollard completed the top three line up, leaving the boys and Eloise Dorans to compete for the remaining places in this category. The series is sponsored by Vittel and Mark Pickford’s Cycle Shop and the next event is on Sunday 5 December at Mont Rossignol. 5 AND UNDER CLASS 6/7 YEARS OLD CLASS 8/9 YEARS OLD CLASS 10/11 YEARS OLD CLASS |
