Race 1, Val de la Mare, 7 November 2004

Conditions were perfect for the first Under 12’s mountain bike event organised by the Caesarean Cycling Club. Nearly 40 children aged between 5 and 11 years turned up at Val de la Mare for races which took them meandering through the paths amongst the gorse.

The first race was for children aged 5 years and under and was dominated from the start by Sammy Kermin, who led each of the four laps taking victory from Samuel Maher in second. Jack Corcoran finished in third place after suffering mechanical problems with his bike during the race.

The 6/7 year class completed six laps of the same course as the younger age group and the competition between first place Harry Garnham and second placed Matthew Rayson was at times fierce. Neither of these two, nor Michael Milner or Theo Ibbotson in third and fourth place, made way for anyone else and stayed in the same place at the completion of each lap. Robyn Stuart, the only girl riding in this age group, steadily improved her place throughout the race, finishing in eighth place.

The start of the 8/9 year class was hurriedly moved to accommodate a short but steep climb up a single width track. Joshua O’Donoghue quickly stamped his authority on this age group and sped away from the rest of the group. Only four of the eight competitors completed the four laps of an extended course, such was his speed and ability to lap other riders. George Milner finished in second place, whilst Steffan Kermin overtook Matthew Boxall on the last lap to secure third position. Sisters Nikita and Danielle Connan displayed their continued determination in this sport finishing in sixth and seventh place respectively.

The last event of the afternoon was for the 10/11 year class, racing over 6 laps of the extended course. The largest field of the day saw 14 youngsters line up at the start with Kurt Dingle completing the first lap in the lead. With the riders at the front staying close together, the second lap was led by the eventual winner, Stephen Haley. Kurt Dingle suffered a flat tyre during the race and slipped back to finish in third place with Rikki Knowlton in second. Chantelle Coote improved her position during the race to finish in twelfth place.

The series is sponsored by Vittel and Mark Pickford’s Cycle Shop and the next event is on Sunday 21 November at Les Platons.
