Race 5, 30 January 2005 at Val de le Mare/Mont Rossignol |
The fifth race of the ‘Mark Pickford’s Cycle Shop Winter Series’ took place in overcast but dry conditions. The new course, which now amalgamated the Val de le Mare and Mont Rossignol course, included all the best sections of both, including steep bomb-holes, off-camber tracks and fast flowing singletrack.
A field of 38 riders took to the start for some two hours of racing.
From the whistle the elite riders set a fierce pace with James Patterson, Kieron Mills and Mark Le Sueur quickly splitting the pack. By lap two the short sharp climbs and technical descents had settled the pace with James and Kieron starting to open a good lead. Over the next few laps Robin Ovenden and Richard Tanguy worked hard with Robin managing to close the gap and pass Keiron. By lap five James Patterson had managed to open a gap of well over a minute when disaster struck in the form of a broken chain, and with no other option, he was forced to continue on foot for the final two laps. With the news quickly filtering through to the chasing riders, Mills quickly managed to raise his pace and retake the lead, which he held to the final whistle. On the final lap Robin was forced to stop and re-inflate a slow puncture but was still able to hold off a strong finish from Richard.
The Sports Class was yet again close racing with Gary Osbourne making a blistering start up amongst the elite riders on the first lap. Points rivals Paul Le Breton, Jon Coote and Mike James were all just behind and were hungry for a win. Riding strongly and smoothly, Gary was able to open a lead on the chasing bunch and rode unchallenged to his second victory of the season. Behind Paul Le Breton was forced to take a ten second time penalty for failing to dismount but still managed a strong second ahead of a weary Jon Coote.
The Vets Class was as usual won by Bruce Dingle who looked to be thoroughly enjoying himself in the demanding conditions. Colin Malzard had a great return to form for a well deserved second with Michael Boarer having his best ride of the season to secure third spot.
The Ladies Class was once again won by the consistent Caroline Davies with Janet Gallichan riding well to take second.
All the School Boys showed strength and endurance beyond their years to complete this extended course. Rhys Hidrio once again secured victory with newcomer Rikki Knowlton riding superbly in his first race to take second from Matthew Coote.
The next race will be on the Sunday 20th February at Sorel Point, St. John. Please sign on at the earlier time of 8.30am and be ready to race at 9.00am. This is due to the new extended race times.
All race and course cutting dates are available on either the Caesaren Cycling Club website at www.ccc.je, or at any good sports shop.
