Race 4, 9 January 2005 at Mont Rossignol, St. Ouen |
The fourth race of the new ‘Mark Pickford’s Cycle Shop Winter Series’ took place in great conditions on the revised and more challenging course of Mont Rossignol, St. Ouen. This inter-insular course had been modified to include some very tricky off-camber and downhill sections.
A field of 37 riders took to the start line for the first race of the 2005 season, with many looking as though they had enjoyed Christmas a little too much.
From the whistle the elite riders set a fast pace with Kieron Mills and James Patterson quickly pulling away as they entered the tricky off-camber single track. Fellow elite riders Ian Le Lai, Robin Ovenden and Mark Le Sueur were all left chasing. By lap four Kieron and James were still matching each another pedal-stroke for pedal-stroke, but with strength on his side, Kieron managed to open a gap on the steep climb and worked his way clear all the way to the final whistle. James dug-in hard but wasn’t quite able to bridge the gap and had to settle for strong second. Further behind Ian Le Lai and Robin Ovenden were both riding consistently and it looked as though it was going to be left to a sprint finish to decide third position. However, on the penultimate climb Ian’s smooth riding skills paid off, opening a gap, and riding to a well deserved third spot.
The Sports Class was to see some new faces at the top with a superb ride from Gary Osbourne who finally managed to secure his first ever win! Second place also saw a great effort from relative newcomer Jon Coote with Christian Guegan holding on for third spot.
The Vets Class was once again won in fine style by Bruce Dingle who was un-challenged from the very start. Ian Cabot once again rode strongly to take second from the ever consistent Dave Bihet.
The Ladies Class was won with yet another great ride by Caroline Davies with Janet Gallichan riding well to take second.
The School Boys Class was won in fine style by Rhys Hidrio with Stephen Le Brun managing to hold off Matthew Coote for second spot.
The next race will be on the Sunday 30h January at Val de la Mare. Please sign on at the earlier time of 8.30am and be ready to race at 9.00am. This is due to the new extended race times.
All race and course cutting dates are available on either the Caesaren Cycling Club website at www.ccc.je, or at any good sports shop.
