Summer Mountain Bike Series 2005
|
|
Race 2, Vautier's, St. John5 June 2005Sponsored by Lawrence de Gruchy Cycles |
A 2 hour mountain bike race in continuous rain is not many peoples idea of fun, but 43 riders lined up for the second race of the Caesarean Cycling Clubs second race of the summer series sponsored by Lawrence de Gruchy Cycles.
The valley in Sion, Trinity had
everything a mountain bike rider enjoys; Single tracks, fast technical decents,
jumps and streams to ride down, but the weather was to make the grassy climbs
and corners very difficult to maintain traction on.
Kieron Mills set the pace from the start and was closely followed by James
Patterson, by the end of the first lap these two riders were to open up
a gap of 1 minute of 3rd placed Ian Lelai.
Due to the continuous rain conditions on the track were to deteriorate, with many riders parting company with their bikes, Mills being one of them with a rare mistake which handed the lead to Patterson on the 2nd lap. Mills regained the lead 2 laps later and rode strongly to comfortable victory 4 minutes in front of Patterson. Phil Le Brun who has just returned to the sport class after a couple of years out, rode his heart out to win the sport class from Gary Osbourne, pre race favourite Jon Coote punctured on lap 1 when he ripped open his tyre on a rocky section and had to retire.
Robert Coutanche only took the lead in the schoolboy class on the last lap from a tiring Rikki Knowlton, and Stephen Le Brun took third.
Once again Bruce Dingle showed his skills in difficult conditions to win the veterans class, with Colin Malzard splitting the Dingle brothers as Pete finished 3rd.
Barley Jackson took her second
win in the series, closely followed by Caroline Davies.
Special mention must go to Chantelle Coote aged 12 who completed her first
race on a senior course against all the schoolboys.
Thanks to landowners Mr Averty & Mr Vautier for allowing the event to take place.
