Winter Mountain Bike Series 2005/06

The first race of the Mark Pickford Mountain Bike Winter Series took place in strong winds and heavy intermittent rain at the Belle Fleur course, Grouville. 34 hardy riders took to the line for what was going to be a muddy slog over mixed farm track and wooded coppice. The start was a typical frantic pack of legs and elbows, but quickly thinned as riders slowed to negotiate a steep drop and muddy off camber section. Elite riders Kieron Mills, Mark Le Sueur and Robin Ovenden soon opened a sizeable gap from the chasing bunch. A puncture on lap 2 proved costly for current elite class champion Kieron Mills. Seizing the initiative, Robin Ovenden and Mark Le Sueur both pushed hard and by lap 4 were extending their advantage. Behind, having fixed his puncture, Kieron was working hard to fight his way back into third position. Island Games medallist James Patterson was struggling to find his form after a Summer off the bike as well as a broken front brake leaver. This new series also saw the welcome return of road riders Sam Firby and Chris Spence who unfortunately found the thick mud and fast starts not to their liking. By the final whistle and 8 laps completed Robin finished with a comfortable lead over Mark, with Kieron securing a well deserved third spot. The Sports Class saw the return of Mark Wanless who put in a smooth, consistent ride to take victory in his first mountain bike race for almost 2 years. James Ollivier pushed hard every lap to secure second spot from smooth pedalling Chris Stone. Luke Vincent had his best result to date securing a very well deserved fourth place! The Veteran's class was once again dominated by the Dingle duo of Bruce and Pete. With their closest rival absent, both rode at a blistering pace from the start to take first and second spots. Simon Stead proved that good old fashioned hard training and determination is the key, taking a superb third place. The Women's Class Barley Jackson showed that she had not lost her touch, putting in a great ride in the harsh conditions to take a well deserved win. Janet Gallichan showed her usual determination for second place. The Schoolboy's Class was as usual a hotly contested affair. From the start it looked like it was going to be an evenly matched four way battle. Current schoolboy champion Robert Coutanche once again showed strength and fitness, managing to open a lead and stay away from chasing riders of Stephen Le Brun and Rikki Knowlton. ELITE CLASS 1
