The third race of the 'Mark Pickford's Cycle Shop Winter Series' saw 35 riders line up what was to turn into a mud-fest. Heavy overnight rain had turned the entire course in to a quagmire. The start was an all out sprint across open field before a steep drop and then climb out into farm double-track. After a short, muddy climb riders negotiated a small wooded section before tracking more fields and a second larger wooded section, where riders were forced to dismount and run with their bikes. Elite rider Kieron Mils was the first away, closely followed by Michael Boarer and Robin Ovenden. A first lap momentary lapse of concentration by Kieron was all that was needed for Robin to take advantage and make his move. Robin rode hard lap-on-lap to extend his lead and remained unchallenged for the entire 8 laps, some 4 minutes ahead. Kieron rode consistently to take second place with Ian Le Lai holding on for third. The Sports Class saw yet another superb ride from Rhys Hidrio to take another win in this his first year in the sports class. Having made a good start he worked hard in the challenging conditions and at one point was able to challenge Michael Boarer for third place overall. After a crash in the woods he was forced to chase hard, but eventually had to settle to a very credible fourth place overall. Lee Wells proved that his new training was working by taking an excellent second place from Chris Stone. Michael Boarer was again unstoppable in the Vets Class, taking first place in the class and third overall. Ian Cabot again showed ever-improving form with a fine second place from Colin Malzard in third. The Ladies Class saw Lucy Ovenden excel in the tricky conditions taking first from Caroline Davies and newcomer Helene Mon Petit. Rikki Knowlton rode a great race to take the School Boys Class from young Rory Hidrio. The next race will be on the Sunday 7 January at Sorel Point, St. John. Please sign on at 9.00am and be ready to race at 9.30am. All race and course cutting dates are available on either the Caesarean Cycling Club website at www.ccc.je , or at any good sports shop.
