Sponsored by Lawrence de Gruchy Cycles Round 1, St. Ouen's Mill, 15 July 2007The CCC Mountain bike summer series finally got underway at St Ouen's Mill after the originally planned first race at Hamel's Land had been cancelled due to heavy rain. A willing band of club members had done a stirling job to prepare the St Ouen's course, which is always a favourite, with a good mix of riding terrain. The lap, approximately 2.5km started with some flat single and double track, was then followed by a tricky rocky descent and finished with a relatively long, continuous and stony climb. The warm and humid conditions on the day also added to the challenge of the course. The start was a soft, off-camber field with riders all trying to take the high, slightly firmer ground for increased speed. Kieron Mills, Rhys Hidrio and Michael Boarer lead the pack towards the first bend. In the Elite class Mills, having recently returned from the Island Games in Rhodes, maintained his lead from the start and rode a majestic race to win. His high work rate on the climb and his fast but mistake-free descent meant he lapped all but the top 4 riders during the race. Rhys Hidrio rode strongly and consistently but could not hold off a determined Ian Lelai, who made a pass on lap 6 to take 2 nd with Hidrio taking 3 rd . Lelai appeared to be benefiting from good race fitness after a recent 24-hour marathon event in the UK. Hidrio, having just moved into the elite category and also competing in UK National cross-country events is an ever improving competitor.

The Veterans class, always keenly contested, saw Michael Boarer, the current champion, get off to a flying start and maintain the pace, particularly on the downhill section, for the class win and 2 nd overall, his best to date. Colin Malzard, who was hungry for victory had to settle for 2 nd , with a steadily improving Sandy Hugh in 3 rd . Hugh will be one to watch this season. In the Sport class, the largest of the day, experience showed as Graham Horsley paced himself from the off and made his way steadily through the field to secure 1 st place in class and 5 th overall. Chris Stone took a well deserved 2 nd and Mark Wanless finished a strong 3 rd . The Super-Vets class was convincingly won by Chaz Knight riding strongly to the finish and taking 12 th overall and in the Ladies class Caroline Davies was not deterred as the only female competitor on the day and rode consistently throughout. The Club would like to extend its thanks to the landowners and Parish for enabling the race to take place.
