The penultimate race of the season was nothing if not atmospheric from the start. With storm clouds looming it looked like they might be a serious threat to the race entry, but within minutes the winds had cleared the sky to leave a bright and sunny afternoon for the what was to be the largest turnout of the season so far, with some 52 youngsters keen to do battle on an exciting Val de la Mare track. In the 10/11 age group the new course proved highly popular, with humps and jumps for the riders to conquer. This enabled Matthew Rayson to continue his winning ways, applying his motocross skills to the mountain biking arena. After an aggressive start he pulled steadily away with Hugh Percival working hard for second place. In 3rd was Oliver Lowthorpe with another good ride. In the girls class Nikita Connan was a match for the boys and recorded her 6th class win. In the 8/9 class Harry Garnham returned to winning ways with a great victory but not after having had to fight off Michael Milner who enjoyed anothergreat race and who lead on the second lap. The ever consistent Sam Maher rounded off the top 3 with great encouragement from Maher senior, who certainly helped him maintain the required pace! This class too, enjoyed the more challenging course, attacking the technical sections with no fear or hesitation. Phoebe Percival was top girl after a steady performance and Teigan Purkiss overcame her race day nerves to finish 2nd. The 6/7 year age group, with 22 riders made up the largest class on the day. Quickest out of the blocks was Ben Le Rougetel who rode very well on his new high performance Scott race bike. It was the championship leader, Jack Lutz however, who took up the running on the second lap and looked to be set for another victory. But Luc Monpetit LeBrun had other ideas and on lap 4 forged ahead and pushed on for the class win to keep pace with his father’s recent performances in the seniors. Tom Le Rougetel had to settle for 4th in this highly competitive class. Even with a chain problem, Indi Malzard rode a great race for victory also eager to get back to winning ways. Eloise Dorans was not far behind in 2nd place and Aimee Banks took 3rd. In the 5 and Under class, the numbers swelled to 11 for the first race of the day. Thomas Boarer got the drop on Oliver Daniels from the start but Oliver worked hard and squeezed ahead on the second lap and maintained the lead for victory in the three lap race. Thomas had to settle for 2nd and Malo MonPetit Le Brun took 3rd. Aimee Hugh was a deserving winner in the girls class showing great determination throughout the race. The cycling club would like to thank the landowners for access to the land. The next event of the series is due to take place on the 30th March at Les Platons with prize giving to follow after.
