Summer Mountain Bike Series 2008

Race 2, Val de la Mare, 6 July 2008

The second Lawrence de Gruchy sponsored, CCC Mountain Bike Summer Series event took place at a slightly varied Val de la Mare course, with the 32 riders on the line. A fresh breeze assisted the riders at the start with an uphill section then putting pressure on the leaders trying to maintain the pace.

In the elite class Kieron Mills charged ahead and had soon opened up a lead from the chasing pack. Robin Ovenden, along with Kieron not long back from the Mountain Mayhem Marathon race, lost valuable time clearing his chain from grass and was playing catchup from then on. Kieron also picking up some grass pushed on relentlessly and was clear winner in class and overall. Robin took 2nd in class and overall.

In the sport class, Pawel Rejak rode a great race for class victory and took 3rd place overall sqeezing out Vet, Eric Le Brun on the penultimate lap. Graham Horsely, was not far behind and after eclipsing Michael Boarer on lap 4 took 6th place overall and 2nd in class. Gary Osbourne was 3rd Sport rider and Mark Hugget took a good 4th.

In the Veterans class Eric Le Brun was in top form and after a first lap crash by Colin Malzard had slowed his progress he soon pushed on to class victory and 4th overall. Malzard recovered from the fall and slow pulled ahead of Boarer throughout the race and they finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Christian Ardley was 4th in class.

In the Ladies class, 'Jim' Davis maintained a high pace to complete 5 laps and was clear winner from Lisa Barker in 2nd and Caroline Davies in 3rd both completing 4 laps of the track.

In the Super-Vets Chaz Knight returned to good form and led Mark Knowlton and David Bihet to victory, though all finished line astern. In the Schoolboys class Rikki Knowlton was in great form, completing 6 laps and was not lapped by the overall winner. George Milner was 2nd and Kurt Dingle, not able to race against his Dad as he was away, took 3rd!

The club extends its grateful thanks to the landowners for use of the land and to all the club members who assisted with the course preparation.
