Race 2, Val de la Mare, 6 July 2008

Summer took on a wintery look for the youngsters taking part in the second race of the summer series. Wind and rain kept some riders at home but around 30 still took on the challenge of the Val de la Mare course and the promise of medals for the top finishers.

In the 5 and under class, five entrants lined up for the first race and it was a lightening start for Malo Monpetit Le Brun with Billy Malzard in hot pursuit. Malo kept up the work rate for a great victory and it was Max Bennett who came through on lap three to take 2nd and Billy took 3rd. Sophie Jones was lead girl with Aimee Lutz retiring after the first lap.

In the 6&7 year old class there was a field of 10 riders on the line and good battles in both girls and boys sections. The Le Rougetel boys were in fine form with Ben showing his twin brother, Tom his back wheel from the off and enjoying the twisting and turning single track sections and they took 1st and 2nd respectively. Thomas Boarer put in a gritty ride to take 3rd place. In the girls race Evie Le Breton showed some of her Dads determination to take class win and only a few metres behind Indi Malzard was in 2nd place.

The 8&9 year old class suffered the most challenging conditions of the day with driving rain greeting them for the start. Luc Monpetit LeBrun lead them away with Sam Maher close behind. However a slip and fall for Luc dropped him down the field and Sam Maher maintained great pace to lead to the finish with Oliver Turner, in his first race of the season in 2nd and Mark Boarer holding on to 3rd place. Izzi Lowthorpe was sole girl in the class and maintained good pace despite the wind and rain.

In the 10/11 and 12-14 age group the longer course proved popular, with humps and jumps for the riders to conquer. George Milner was loan rider in the top age group and showed his experience with a smooth ride but in the younger group it was close fought. Despite a late arrival and a shared bike with his sister, Oliver Lowthorpe lead the class away and maintained the lead to the finish, Hugh Percival squeezed into 2nd after bad luck befell Michael Milner who came in 3rd.

The cycling club would like to thank the landowners for access to the land. The next event of the series is due to take place on the 27th July.
