The man who had spent all year practising for the event finally took the club's Down Hill Freewheel Competition on a clear morning on the New North Road, St. John. Dick Turpin was a clear winner from fellow heavy-weights Keith White and Noel Hayden. Dick's wife, Judy kept it in the family by sneaking into the top five just ahead of club vice-president Steve Linney.
John Derrien returned from injury to be placed a creditable seventh.
