Five Channel Islanders travelled to Hampshire to take part in the 2008 National 10 mile Time Trial organised by A3crg
Five Channel Island riders travelled to Hampshire on 25 May 2008, including CCC’s Helen Goulding, to take part in the 2008 National 10 mile Time Trial Championships. With heavy overnight rain and early morning drizzle, serious consideration was given to the use of a back up course until it was discovered that that course was, in parts, flooded. So, after a thirty minute delay, the event started on the planned course of Petersfield-West Liss (A3) P883. The junior riders were the first starters in drizzly conditions yet this slowly cleared and by the time the women’s event got underway, the course became dry under a threatening sky.
Three Guernsey riders were in the Juniors’ event and each had excellent rides with Daniel Arblaster taking first place in a winning time of 19:53 and James McLaughlin second place in 20:03. Sixteen year old Callum Hill-Smith completed the course in 22:19.
In the women’s event Helen Goulding had her best National 10 with time of 23:36 (third in her age group). Guernsey’s Ann Bowditch, riding for the SIS team, finished in 22:25 and won the ladies’ team prize with Helen Carter and Lesley-Anne Walkling.
The women’s event was won by reigning champion, Julia Shaw, in a time of 20:32 and the men’s event, run on course P881r, was won yet again by Michael Hutchinson in a time of 18:07 – just outside the championship record. This was a great event, well organised by A3crg.
