Jersey riders compete in 30th editionThe 30th edition of the two-up time trial, the Duo Normand, attracted a healthy contingent of Jersey riders with 16 pairs travelling to Marigny to take part in the 2011 event. Despite challenging weather conditions, involving high squally winds which increased over the day, and torrential, sometimes prolonged showers, respectable times were posted. The Caesarean Cycling Club’s pairing of Kevin Pilley and Dave Mayman were the fastest of the Jersey riders, riding strongly to record a time of 1 hour, 22 minutes and 47 seconds for the 54.3km course, placing them 6th in the veterans category. They managed to beat the CCC/Velo Sport Jersey pairing of senior riders Paul Millar and Tony Moffa, who came in one second behind them with a time of 1:22:48. The mixed VSJ pairing of Island Games rider Sue Townsend and clubmate Mick Higginson had an excellent ride, posting the highest-placed finish in their category amongst the Jersey riders, by taking 3rd place, in a time of 1:26:58. VSJ ladies, Jemima Leach and Susan Williams also secured a creditable 5th place finish in the ladies class, which travels over a shorter distance. Their were also some solid performances from riders taking part in this challenging event for the first time, including the CCC pairings of David Conboy and Howard Greenside, who posted a fine time of 1:26:37. The Duo Normand is a rarity on the UCI calendar, as amateurs and recreational riders can test themselves against the professionals on the same course on the same day. Although it takes place at around the same time in the professional racing calendar as high profile events such as the Tour of Britain and the world championships, it still attracts over 300 teams, competing in a range of categories from non-licensed riders to elites, with an international field. In the elite category the, winner of the 2011 Paris-Roubaix classic race from Belgium, Johan Van Summeren, and Dutchman Thomas Decker, riding for the professional Garmin-Cervelo Team, posted a winning time of 1:06:48. This means that the course record, of 1:04:47, set by Chris Boardman and Jens Voigt in 1999 remains. Provisional results
